Sherman è un signor nessuno. Un tizio che ama la musica, che
vive a
Cleveland,Ohio, e che va in giro a fare canzoni di altri. Ma
è talmente
bravo che, alla fine, ha costruitoun disco in cui interpreta brani non
suoi, ma chesembrano quasi suoi. Sherman è un iconoclasta,un
melodicone,
uno che ama rileggere allasua maniera brani famosi e non. Non ha
pauradimisurarsi con i più grandi e, se andate a guardarenel
suo sito,
ci sono i titoli che è solito interpretare:una sorta di
enciclopedia
della canzone americana.
American Stranger è il suo debutto ed è un discodecisamente gradevole. Il suomodo di faremusica è volutamente dimesso, rallentato, quasisottotono:ma è unmodo suo di vivere lamusica,di interpretarla.Ascoltate, come esempio, The Harder They Come di Jimmy Cliff: beh, nonha nulla dell’originale. E’ diventata una ballata inpunta di dita, giocata su un tempo lento con glistrumenti che ricamano assoli eleganti. Ma anche Stranger in a Strange Land, di Leon Russell, ci prende di sorpresa. Sherman estrapola lamelodiae, su una canzone che è già lenta, costruisceun suono completamente diverso. E lofa anche con Van Morrison, terrenominato, manon cade, anzi ci diverte con una rilettura originaledi OId Old Woodstock.
Un disco da ascoltarsi a casa, seduti in poltrona, con un bel libro davanti, facendosi cullare dallesonorità avvolgenti e dalle splendide canzoniche Sherman propone.
Come si fa a sfuggi-re ad una Whiter Shade of Pale ipnotica, opuurea He’s Gone di Garcia, quasi irriconoscibile,come pure Blood Brothers di Springsteen.
Non è certo un disco fondamentale, ma siascolta dall’inizio alla fine senza problemi e lasciaun retrogusto dolce, al punto che viene vogliadi assaggiarlo di nuovo.

Jeff Sherman is a Mr. Nobody. A guy who loves music, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio and goes around playing songs of others. But he is so talented that, in the end, he made a record in which he performs others’ songs which almost seem his own songs. Sherman is an iconoclast, a “tuneful man” (note: it’s impossible to translate the word “melodicone”), one who loves to reinterpret in his way popular and less popular songs. He’s not afraid to face music Bigs and, if you visit his web site, you can find a list of songs he usually plays: a sort of encyclopedia of American music.
American Stranger is his debut and is a definitely pleasant record. His way of doing music is intentionally humble, calm, almost undertone: but this is how he feels music. For example, listen to “The Harder They Come” by Jimmy Cliff: well, it is completely different from the original version. It has become a beautiful ballad focused on a slow tempo with the instruments making elegant solos. But also “Stranger in a Strange Land ” by Leon Russell, left us surprised. Sherman extrapolates the melody and, on a song that is already slow, builds a completely different sound. And he does the same on a Van Morrison’s song, a mined terrain, but he doesn’t fall and more than that he entertains us with an original interpretation of “Old Old Woodstock”.
This record is meant to be listened to at home, even sitting on a armchair, while reading a good book, and let us be carried away by the atmosphere and the beauty of the songs that Sherman suggests to us.
How can you miss an hypnotic “Whiter Shade of Pale”, or an almost unrecognizable “He’s gone” by Garcia, or Springsteen’s “Blood Brothers”?
Of course this is not a fundamental record but you can listen to it from the beginning to the end without problems and it leaves you a sweet aftertaste to the point that you want to taste it again.
